Ltd. 2 *Estimate There has been, however, a stable demand from African countries of Nigeria, Senegal, Ivory Coast (Cote d’Ivoire) and South Africa, and also the Near East countries of Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia. In these regions, rice imports in the recent past have been satisfying more than 40% of domestic requirement. The contribution is still higher for Central America and Caribbean countries, with half of their rice consumption now consisting of imports.

3 shows the country-wise production performance of the top 15 rice-producing countries of the world for the recent 6-year period, from 2008–09 to 2013–14, and also the yield data for the year 2013–14. It could be seen that China is the largest producer, contributing to 30% of world rice output, followed next by India with a share of 22%. Thus, these two countries together produce more than half of the world’s rice. China, in fact, has 30% less area under rice cultivation than India but it produces 36% more rice.
