This is extended gradually until children have a sense of the shape of the week – once they have got into a routine of going to school each day and having weekends off. They learn the shape of the year through talking about seasons, festivals, birthdays and other regular events. They can talk about ‘how long until my birthday’, ‘how long until Christmas’ once they have experienced them a few times. A sense of the past starts with the idea of their own past. They can understand the idea of when they were babies and gradually extend back to when Daddy was young, when Granny was a baby and so on.
